As some of you may know, today was our mental health round-table. We invited students to come and discuss the St. John’s Center for Counseling and Consultation, to offer suggestions for new programs, and to talk about the stigma often associated with getting treatment or going to a counselor.
You can read through the presentation we used here.
By the end of the presentation, we outlined 3 goals to meet by the end of this year. Those goals are: implement a Buddy Project (get an idea of that here); market wellness programs more (in classes, on campus, etc); and extend new-student-orientation wellness education sessions.
Other things we discussed:
-getting more students to show up for Wellness training
-getting faculty more involved in Wellness education
-increasing visibility of mental illness in historically marginalized groups
-sending home culturally-sensitive information for parents as ways to educate them about mental health education and the counseling center
-advertising online resources for students in more effective ways
We hope that this meeting marked the beginning of a much larger conversation about mental health on campus and off.
